You might be thinking by now, "Tara is painting quite a dark picture. Can it be worth it? " Yes. Unequivocally, yes it is.
You might wonder is it always like this? And if not, or missteps be possible, why do the spiritual traditions not give more information on the Enlightened states and the return to a life in the world?
Well, its like this. . . there has never been a lot of knowledge forthcoming as regards to Enlightenment, and far less to after Enlightenment. It is unique to the individual; and it used to be a very rare occurrence. No one wrote books on it, other than a line or two, that I am aware of. It is assumed one will know what to do . . . And in Enlightenment one is freed.
In any case . . . today, we are of a different time and culture, we from the West are different than our Eastern counterparts. Our situation is entirely different; and our numbers are, and will continue to be, growing. We may not live near, nor remain within, a tradition that would normally function as guide, neither a country with a way of life that supports this state. We return home. We, by and large, will return to a Western society and the householder life that has little or no support for or understanding of our experience. We are the new wave. . .
We, the Western wave, are following the Eastern traditions. . . but with a difference; and may not even speak the same language as our spiritual preceptors who may have been a touring guru, or working with masses, and not giving much personal or verbal support, hence, unavailable for ongoing direction. And, one may have awakened by means other than direct teaching and initiation. In such cases, all cases essentially, after Enlightenment, you are pretty much on your own.
Nevertheless. . . this is a new day. The Western graduates are now inventing new paths and offshoots of the ways of the East, adapting them to the West. They may never have been to 'The East', and their teachers, and teachers of their teachers, have not either; yet, they use much the same words, concepts and methods. In recent times, I have noticed, many of these paths in the West use psychotherapy and related processes; and many these teachers who follow the Eastern traditions are said to go into therapy, prior to or even after awakening. It's a whole new world out here in the spiritual life . . . and emerging from it came 'new age spirituality'; a branch of beliefs and disciplines devoted to human potential, called spiritual, but really a different thing altogether.
In any case, as regards post Enlightenment, much of what has been written in these pages thus far can be an invaluable guide post . . . that will be recognized when arrived at . . . hence, I hope, assist; that the path may be more deftly negotiated by the newly Enlightened traveler. I wish you well on your way. Until we meet again . . . Namaste. Tara
